General: Deciduous shrub, loosely branched, 0.5-1.5 m tall; stems ascending to decumbent, glabrous to crisp-hairy, unarmed; bark straw-colored to purplish-brown.
Leaves: Alternate, broadly egg-shaped, heart-shaped at the base, 2-10 cm wide, 3 (5)-lobed much less than half their length, the lobes triangular, toothed, glabrous above, more or less hairy below (at least on the veins); stalks equal to or slightly longer than the blades, finely hairy.
Flowers: Inflorescence of 6-13 flowers in a drooping raceme shorter than the leaves; flower stalks 1-4 mm long, jointed below the flowers, glabrous to sparsely hairy and more or less glandular; petals reddish-purple, broadly fan-shaped, 0.8-1 mm long; hypanthium saucer-shaped, 0.7-1 mm long; calyces reddish or purplish, finely hairy; styles glabrous, about equaling the stamens.
Fruits: Berries, egg-shaped, red, 0.6-1 cm long, glabrous.
Moist woodlands, forests, streambanks and rocky slopes in the montane and subalpine zones; frequent in N BC; amphiberingian, N to AK, YT and NT, E to NF and S to NJ, VA, MN SD, and OR; E Asia.
